Pragnyaaparaadha or ‘committing a crime in full knowledge’… Kinda sums up my lunch experience of yesterday. In case of food, Pragnyaaparaadha can take two forms. Either eating something in the complete knowledge that your stomach is going to bear the brunt of it or eating something far beyond the point that your stomach tells you to stop.
Yesterday, I was out with some friends. We ended up missing lunch and went looking for some supposedly amazing place called Minerva, which ultimately turned out to be closed. In sheer desperation, we landed up at some Indian-Chinese eatery at 3:45-4:00 pm and ordered the usual Manchurian-Schezuan sauce thingies which are so representative of the raste-waala Chinese food in B’bay. At one point in the meal, I knew oh-so-clearly that it WAS the time to STOP. Heedless, I plodded through the food. In fact, I was gluttonous upto the point that I was almost gobbling the food… Believe me, I NEVER do this. I get very clear indicators of when to stop and I ALWAYS listen. This time, I didn’t. To top it, the ride home was really long in the backseat of a closed car. Reaching home, I felt like some overstuffed python!!!
All I could do was writhe on the carpet…So many trips to the toilet and my entire digestive canal seems to be on fire from the entry point to the exit point! Strangely enough, I also developed a sore throat and clogged sinuses.
Feeling a bit better now … most of the Chinese seem to have evacuated my stomach.
God, talk about Aartikku naasham, as my Mom would have said…!

But seriously, this is, and SHOULD BE, the last instance when man, oops, woman, didn’t listen to what her tummy (and her Mom) told her!

its near impossible to find Indian-chinese here. Manchurian-Schezuan? Should be called “burn you twice” (entry and exit)
btw, what does aartikku naasham mean?

Lakshmi says:
‘Aarati’ means greed in Malayalam and ‘naasham’ means destruction. ‘Aaratikku naasham’ means ‘there’s only destruction in greed’ and this adage always proves itself when it comes to food, I think!

beautiful phrase! need to note it somewhere.
you can tell it has been tempered in the fire of wisdom, on the anvil of time, pounded over countless generations.

Not really; I have dined at yet another Indian-Chinese restaurant which wasn’t so… lethal! We have quite a few of these joints in Atlanta.
