Some years back, a small boy used to suffer from chronic indigestion. After visiting many Allopathic physicians, his parents finally took him to an Ayurvedic practitioner. This doctor weaned him off all medicines and prescribed him a diet replete with nutrients and encouraged him to include more exercise and activity in his daily schedule. Soon enough, the kid’s problems vanished and he was back to his kicking self again. Till he reached the USA and started bingeing on junk food and red meat and aerated drinks. Exercise vanished and he was back to nursing his upset stomach frequently…. Now, this young man has started taking his old doctor’s advice very seriously. He is a pure vegetarian, practises Yoga regularly and not only his stomach but his dispostion also has improved vastly.
Pinch recently got three books from the library each authored by Dr. Deepak Chopra. Unlike popular perception, Dr. Chopra doesn’t script self-help and self-esteem building books. Well, maybe he does but that is certainly not the mainstay of his writing. Dr. Chopra was a successful practitioner of Western medicine in Boston before he started studying Ayurveda seriously. He trained in Ayurveda under Ayurveda technicians and this caused him to lose his license. Now he is an Ayurvedic consultant for the Maharishi Ayurveda Foundation and has treated countless patients using Ayurveda techniques.
I have been reading ‘Perfect Health’ by Dr. Chopra and among some of the most exciting things, he talks about the quantum method of healing.
In the good doctor’s own words,
In India’s ancient Vedic tradition, the most basic force underlying all of nature is intelligence. The universe, after all, is not “energy soup”; it is not mere chaos. The incredibly exact fit of things in our world – above all, the astonishing existence of DNA – argues for an infinite amount of intelligence in nature……Instead of seeing your body as a collection of cells, tissues, and organs, you can use the quantum perspective to see it as a silent flow of intelligence, a constant bubbling up of impulses that create, control, and become your physical body. The secret of life at this level is that anything in your body can be changed with the flick of an intention.
Dr. Chopra gives the example of a 6-year old boy who suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder. This child had more than 12 different personalities living within him. As Timmy dropped one personality and put on another, remarkable changes occurred in his body. One personality suffered from diabetes and therefore exhibited insulin-deficiency. Yet the other personalities tested normally for insulin levels. One personality had high blood pressure while the others didn’t. Scars, warts and sores appeared and disappeared with the changing of personalities. Some personalities had blue eyes and some were brown-eyed.
Dr. Chopra opines that ‘As Timmy chooses to be allergic, we confront the possibility that we are choosing our own diseases too. But if we have such an ability, we should be able to control it too.’
Seems like a marvellous doctrine….You must read it to know what I’m talking about.

I have read some of his works and he is a nice writer. Many of the things he says makes sense medically as well. Personally he is a money-seeking grub 🙁
that aside, I completely agree with the premise. Even others in western medicine using evidence-based science grudgingly agree the role ‘hope’ plays in our healing/health. More recently there is the finding that ‘placebos’ (essentially sugar pills) used as controls in drug investigations work as well as the actual medicine! There is more to this and i for one am completely sold on the nutritional living side of life.
As an anecdote, my close friend here constantly gets sinus infections. This has been going on for many years. At each episode he needed antibiotics. It was getting so bad that about six months ago, he was on antibiotics for nearly two months. They even recommended surgery! Then his mother had gotten very upset with this whole thing and got him to start taking a spoon of ‘Dabur chawanprash’ with a glass of milk every night. I don’t know how they are related, but he has not had a sinus infection since. The 6-month infection free period has been the longest yet he says! A few months back when he told me of his progress, I had started taking Chawanprash as well 🙂
Being in the field, I can vouch that allopathic medicines are not the miracle drugs they are made out to be. For every problem they solve, the create another subtler problem – which ofcourse can be fixed by another drug, … and on it goes.
Eat in moderation, eat nutritious foods, excercise and stay healthy! what more can we ask for.

Arun, I was hoping that you’d reply to this post; I knew you’d add more sense to my new-found knowledge!
Thanks!
You know, I find this concept of ‘balancing your doshas’ and ‘moderate lifestyle’ so convincing… almost feel like joining an Ayurveda college! There is one in New Mexico, run by an Indian practitioner… Some day!

one of my cousins in india has been insisting that I go to this Ayurveda resort in Kerala, where your system is ‘cleansed.’ A new you, he promises! Do you know about this?
I guess the programs in india are going to be shorter and less expensive.

Oh, that’s a great program and it started in Arya Vaidyasala, Kottakkal. The clinic (I don’t think that ‘clinic’ is what they call it) is very well-known. They have programs ranging upto 21 days and if you follow everything they say, you will feel totally ‘rejuvenated’… Amazing oil massages, head massages, diets, herbal tonics, simple food, music – holistic healing… Would like to do it someday myself.

Panchakarma..
The program is called ‘Panchakarma’ or ‘purification of the body’. It includes intake of medicinal oils, using mild laxatives, oil massages, sweating by use of herbalised steam, herbal enemas, intake of herbal nasal mixtures to clean your nasal tract, meditation, primordial sound therapy, marma therapy among other techniques.

Arya Vaidyasala rocks!!!!
Remember Kakaji??? he used to believe whole-heartedly in Ayurveda and we had our own personal vaidya who prescribed medicines from Arya Vaidyasala….I remember this one time that my grandma fell really ill and she could barely speak or swallow….Vaidyaraj gave her some steam (of milk with some hazaar medicines in it) for a week and she was as goo as new…that is not the end of the story…we had a dog then Gulzar who didn’t bark at all….so anyway each day after the steaming was done, Mom would feed all that milk to Gulzar and guess what…..around the same time that grandma got well, we heard a strange dog barking…turned out to be Gulzar dearest…that proves that Ayurveda works on all living creatures 🙂

Re: Arya Vaidyasala rocks!!!!
Ayurveda is definitely a good way to go, specially considering the side effects of the allopathic medicines (as suggested by Arun). One of my dad’s friend, Dr. Ashok Vaidya worked in R&D dept of Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals all his life and now heads the SPARC in Bombay where they do a lot of clinical studies on effectiveness of medicinal plants. He used to recommend ayurvedic medicines to me everytime I had some problems. Take longer to cure but definitely work better than allopathic medicines.
Yasho, I definitely remember this with Kakaji and Granny. Though didn’t know Gulzar never barked 🙂 never noticed that i guess…

i practise yoga daily for one hour on all weekdays and prefer not to skip it. the effects are amazing.
i was just telling my friend how i used to gym to stay fit and have done more workouts at the gym than yogasanas but the effects are marked and visible. Yoga definitely controls the body and the mind in more or less the same way.
Shall write more on yoga later !

Vasanth, I think that yoga is far more beneficial because it impacts your body far lesser than any regular work-out… and it works on an intrinsic level as well.

I think Deepak Chopra rehashes a lot of the ancient Ayurvedic principles to present a more commercially viable package, primarily for the West.
I completely am in agreement about the mind having the power to create diseases in a body as well as in controlling it as well, given the individual’s response and disposition.
A friend of mine consults people on Naturopathy /Ayurveda and ‘Nadi’ reading. It is fascinating how she does these readings by simply checking the pulse of the person and through a method called dousing, she can ascertain what ails the person. She also gets an understanding of the basic structure of the person in terms of his/her emotional well being etc, which has a huge reflection on a person’s physical well being.
For me personally, homeopathy has always helped far better than allopathy. In fact I hate allopathy and it often leaves me feeling far worse. I think an alternative way of life is far more healthier and if we go back to our basics, we would realise that in India we have such a tremendous resource in Ayurveda etc that it seems so foolish that only when it is regurgitated back by the likes of Deepak Chopra, do we actually pay heed.

I agree, Dee.. but I have to thank Dr. Chopra for the fact that he’s written tomes on the subject and shed more light on Ayurveda… It seems like some kind of a magical knowledge to have, doesn’t it?

Ya that’s true. Perhaps our generation would never have known much it if it weren’t for him to repackage it and present a more contemporary feel to it.
