The reason why these new Hindi songs appeal so much to me is, they bring back to me all those images of Bombay that I so dearly cherish. Bombay is now a racy city, quick and nippy on her feet (not that she was anyway different earlier). But this is a new avatar of the city. When I hear ‘Deedar De’ or ‘Nach Baliye’, it takes me to Lokhandwala, with the tall towers and endless shopping complexes. Punjabi women, tall and fair, dressed in lovely salwar kameees, pretty young girls wearing jeans that flare at the bottom, the endless parade of soap-opera stars and starlets, the rare meeting with Sridevi in the local beauty parlour… the all-night joints in 7 Bungalows, the various shops selling greeting cards, soft toys and other goodies. Cell phones in all sizes and colours in the shiniest shades possible, bumper to bumper traffic along the suburban junctions, tall piles of bestsellers in paperback versions, bunches of roses at traffic junctions, Radio Mirchi, hip women in the local trains stepping out at Bandra, above all the blazing sunlight, the pouring rain, the infernal heat – how the city rejoices!

7 Bungalows and Versova, Ohh I miss them.
I miss:
1. Mostly Kababs
2. Sony Mony Electronics shop
3. The Legacy of China in 4-1/2 Bungalows
4. Options
5. Signature Restaurant
6. Bon Bon
7. The Baskin Robbins at the corner at Yaari Road.
And above all Pop Tates and it’s large Kingfisher Beer Towers.
Thanks for refreshing that memory.

I love Pop Tates. The best thing about 7 Bungalows is, the entry to the beach through the tall buildings. Sitting on the rocks watching the sunset, trying to dodge the eunuchs that accost the young couples, eating ice-cream at the Sancha parlour right across the road – sunset-shaded golden memories!

Yeah, I love the Versova beach or rather used to. It was actually quite clean compared to other Bombay beaches but then this was 10 years back. I had like a million dates on that beach, unfortunately with the same girl. 😉
It was best late evenings and especially if you timed yourself to grab the gol-guppa on your way out of the beach. Of course, an utter mess after the Ganpati immersion.
My dad is such Pop Tate’s patron that the owner knows him well and so does the chef. Ravi the chief chef at that time ( and this time I’m talking 2 years back) wpuld come out himself and take our orders and prepare off the menu items for us. Was really nice to go there. They still send a bottle of wine to our Mumbai residence on my Birthday. Now, that’s customer care, what say you?

Same story except that it was the same guy! Heck, that’s where our chhoti si prem kahaani started…:-) Probably we ran into you and the girl a couple of times and didn’t even realize it!
Aren’t you lucky with getting wine on your b’day and all that!

Thanks! But this is a small cross-section of the city, not the entire city. She defies description…:-)

This is suburban Bombay, yaar… The real Bombay encompasses South Bombay as well and that I missed talking about… simply because that is quite olde-worlde whereas the suburbs are young, nippy and full of action…:-)
Not that I don’t love South Bombay as well.
