‘Mystic River’ on Saturday night. Sean Penn is a great looker with a good physique and fine features. Am not sure if his performance was Oscar-worthy. For that matter, Tim Robbins neither. If the film wasn’t an Oscar nominee, I wouldn’t have considered it worthy either. Strangely enough, Kevin Bacon turned in a good performance, subtle and restrained. The rest of the cast was fair enough.
‘Mystic River’ brought forth memories of ‘Sleepers’, one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. Brad Pitt, Jason something(from Cruise Control), Minnie Driver, Robert De Niro and others… 4 young kids indulge in a harmless prank and an unfortunate accident occurs in which an innocent bystander is killed. The 4 youngsters land in a remand home. Kevin Bacon plays the role of the warden, a totally depraved and perverted individual. Throughout the length of their stay in the home, the youngsters are sodomised, beaten, tortured…. Certain shots I couldn’t bear to watch but I can still briefly hear the voice of this young child pleading, “Please, don’t.. please, please…” and kneeling before Bacon who starts unbuttoning his fly. De Niro has played the priest who sees the children go through this ordeal but is totally helpless. ‘Sleepers’ is a very powerful and compelling film and has an amazing, rather sad climax wherein the tables are turned, well somewhat…
Yes, it totally brings home the point that sexual abuse and perversion play a very powerful and significant role in chalking out the future life of the individual. It’s very depressing and makes me understand the fears and paranoia of parents… Come to think of it, any extent to which you can protect your child isn’t great enough. With the kind of abuse that happens and weirdos that the world abounds in, you can never protect your child enough.
How DID my parents let me go on all those all-night parties, those treks…. God, I’m destined to be a paranoid Mom…:-)
Spoke to Geetu and Mummy this morning.. feel very homesick. I wish I could go back to Bombay to my family.

Makes you appreciate your parents all the more now, doesn’t it?

A real romantic and depressing story.. what do you think?

I loved it – especially the snowy feel throughout the movie. I think the gloomy feel to the movie made it all the more interesting. Renee and Nicole were awesome too.

Gosh – And I was thinking am I the only guy around here thinking that. I second that – The look-alike, entirely, in a gazillion shots, all through the movie.
