Saravana Bhavan

Madras Saravana Bhavan used to be a veritable culinary institution in Georgia. People thronged the restaurant for its super-crisp dosas, excellent sambar and chutneys, and South Indian tiffin and snack items. Regular North Indian fare was also served. Then the restaurant had a change of management (and probably owners as well). A new name, changed decor, modified menu… Saravana Bhavan came to Atlanta. Many South Indians are familiar with this name. As I understand, this chain of restaurants was started in 1981 in South India and now has branches all over the world.

While growing up, Mom would be mortified at the idea of going out to eat South Indian food. Why would you do that when you get the best of its kind at home itself? No debating with that! Even my friends can vouch for the sheer deliciousness that is Mummy’s cooking. “As soft as flowers” is how my grandfather used to describe the idlis she made. Maybe I had scant appreciation for her cooking back then but now I can only fantasize about our wonderful Sunday mornings spent with steaming hot idlis and coconut chutney, coffee, Sunday Mid-Day and TV. Mmmm, that’s the kind of stuff awesome childhood memories are made up of.

But I digress! So, Saravana Bhavan does a decent job of the South Indian dishes on the menu. They also have a thali option that serves rice, pooris, and an array of South Indian curries and vegetable preparations. I have always wanted to order the thali but my stomach quails at the idea of the stupor that’d follow after the meal. Maybe one day, I’ll steel myself to go ahead and order it.

So yesterday, P and I went over for lunch. We happened to be in the neighborhood and both of us wanted to have something light and easy. I ordered a plate of Rasa Vada which basically comprises of two Medu Vadas submerged in a bowl of Tomato Rasam. P liked the dish although I found it a tad too salty for my taste. The Rasam comes with a liberal garnish of coriander leaves (or cilantro, as it’s called here in the United States). The Vadas were fairly okay. I found them a little bland but overall, it was a good start to the meal.

I wanted to steer clear of potatoes, and so I ordered the plain Rava Dosa. This is a great dish to order if you are in the mood for something relatively light. The dosa is made of semolina (anyone wish to confirm that for me?) and it’s served with an array of chutneyssambar. The dosa was very crisp; it literally cracked on the plate! It’s a fairly large-sized dosa too. P ordered the Biryani. I have ordered it before and I really like how they make it. What we were served yesterday was milder on spice. I do like the spicier version, though. It comes with vegetable raita that is a great accompaniment to biryani always!

All in all, a satisfactory meal that would have been perfect had I ordered a glass of the South Indian coffee but I forgot… 🙁 Dessert would have been a great finish also but they only had three desserts – Gulab JamunPaayasam and Rava Kesari. Hmmm, not for me.

Go to Saravana Bhavan, really. They do a nice job of South Indian snacks and tiffin items. Service is good too.

Z Pizza

Visited Z Pizza yesterday. We went to the branch on Windward Parkway. I really liked the decor. Lots of light, walls painted in shades of pastel green, long wooden benches… We got there early evening and so there weren’t many folks around.

Ordered the Moroccan Rustica Pizza. It came on a flat bread base (which I prefer to the regular base, anyway) with toppings of caramelized onions, roasted eggplant, basil pesto, pine nuts, feta cheese and mozzarella. YUMMY!

Moroccan Rustica

Z Pizza has PLENTY of options for vegetarians. Indeed, it’s tough to make a choice since all the pizzas sound/look absolutely delectable. It’s not unusual to find pizzas with toppings like mango chutney, gorgonzola, arugula, peanut sauce, bean sprouts, etc. I am positive that I also saw some gluten-free options on the menu. I also saw a roasted fruit pizza listed as dessert! Must get that next time.

Mumbai Masala

Some of the most delicious chaat I have eaten is in Bombay. Imagine plates of golden bhel flecked with tiny bits of green mangoes, verdant cilantro leaves, and chopped onions, spiced with date-tamarind and green coriander chutney, platters of puris served with potatoes, tumblers of ice-cold pani puri masala water, sprouts, sweet chutney – dip and dunk and swallow! Alu tikkis, ragda patties, sev puri, samosa chaat… Everyone has a favorite place to eat chaat in their nook of the city. I have slurped countless plates at Gupta Bhel, a tiny joint right outside Andheri Station. Bang opposite was McDonalds and do I need to say – Gupta’s could easily boast of having more fans than McDonalds!

Lucky for us, here in Atlanta, we now have a chaat joint that serves food almost as delicious as what we gorged on in Bombay. Mumbai Masala is nestled among the other eateries in Global Mall but can I say – it outshines each one of them! The chutneys are absolutely fresh, spiced just right – none of that excessive spice-salt-grease – and the variety is staggering. Plus they always have some daily specials. And the masala chai is the perfect ending.

Pictures are few but I promise to be back with more!

Loving Hut

Before you think that I have begun eating meat… Last night, we visited Loving Hut for dinner. There’s something so charming about this place! The servers were wonderful; one of them even asked us if we wanted to avoid onions and garlic in our meal. The menu selection is plentiful and the ambience is cheery. I have to say, this place seemed to be filled with Sattva.

We went with J & J and ordered an assortment of items. The Fabulous Pho soup was wonderful! It had rice noodles, vegan ham, green onions, lots of basil, mushrooms… MMM. I have to admit, I am squeamish around the fake meat and avoided those huge floating soy chunks. The soup was wonderfully flavored and it filled me up in a really warm and satisfying way. P ordered the Wonton Soup and he adored it. Cilantro, sesame, rice wontons, shredded carrots… wonderful! J ordered the daily special – Rainbow Soup. She has a very sensitive palate meaning not much stuff makes it past her attention when it comes to food, preparation, spices, etc. And she loved the soup!

The BBQ sticks were nice too with a generous garnish of sesame seeds. Again, it took me a while to get past the sight but once the sticks made their way to my mouth, I was fine.

I hardly ever turn down dessert – we got the Chocolate Mousse. It was sweet without being cloying, light and heavenly! Who’d think it’s vegan???!!!

Loving Hut’s philosophy permeates everything – the ambience, the servers, and the food. Living gently on this earth, consuming what’s needed, respecting life in all its forms… how can I not love a place like this one?
