“What is that thing called…. a silencer? Oh no, a pacifier!”
Picture me looking horrified… and my friend breaking out into peals of laughter.
I would like to know the function served by the contraption jammed into the mouths of little children. Is it put there to keep them silent? Or to make up for the absence of the nipple? Does it cause kids to put their thumbs in their mouths as they grow older, in an attempt to make up for its absence?
[No, I am not expecting the pitter patter of little feet – merely curious.]

It is a comfort thing.
A lot of kids who don’t get pacifiers suck their thumb instead. I think pacifiers cut down on thumbsucking, actually.

Oh, I didn’t know. I thought that they were placed primarily to keep the kids quiet… and that seemed like an awful thing to do.

Well, it does keep kids quiet but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing – when a kid is upset a pacifier quiets them because the nursing action is comforting and comfortable – which benefits both the kid and the people around said kid.

As a friend of mine said sometime:
“We always wanted the pitter patter of little feet. So, we got a puppy – that way we got more pitter-patter and a lot more feet!” 😉

Some kids are born with a sucking instint. Obviously you cannot sit with them the whole day offering the nipple, so the pacifier helps in soothing them down and catering to that sucking instict or else the thumb goes into the mouth, or for that matter any finger/combination of fingers. This is a problem later on cos you can get them off the pacifier-sucking habit but what will you do if they get hooked to the finger? So a pacifier seems like a better option.
