Not really, Arun… this is fairly usual and in fact, the colour isn’t that great either. A really good mehendi has a deep reddish hue… Mine turned into a dark brown..:-(

arunshanbhag says:
L: from what I remember the women talking, the darker the better. Also, it probably turns lighter with time. The artwork is so fine and detailed! How long did it take the person to do just the hands?
btw, it that a ganesh or something at the base of your right index finger?
July 30, 2004 — 1:11 pm
Lakshmi says:
That’s a Ganesha at the base. The lady took a lot of time; don’t recall how much. Her work was very skilful and beautiful but I didn’t like the colour so much. Darker and redder is better….Applying oil regularly during the first two days after you get the mehendi done, exposing your hands to clove fumes.. all this helps in getting a better colour.

Out of sheer curiosity, is there any symbolic reason for doing the Mehndi thing?. My sister had hers done for her wedding, and it was considered unusual in Thrissur.

I follow your posts quite often, so the fact that your husband is a Gujarati is not a revelation. At the risk of sounding repetitive, let me rephrase my question, any idea where the tradition of applying mehndi came from, and significance if any.?

Saw this with a quick google search here.
“A bride whose family has little money wears her mehndi in place of ornate gold jewellery. A bride is not expected to perform any housework until her wedding mehndi has faded.”

I am sorry I have no idea about the origin of the mehendi tradition. Looks like you’ve been helped by the others on this list, though…:-) Hope your question has been answered.

π Simple, Arun. My parents hail from Kerala. They settled in B’bay where I was born and brought up. My husband is a Bombayite too whose parents are originally from Gujarat. I met my hubby in college and we got married 4 years after I graduated from college. That’s the story so far….:-)
