It’s time I got a new camera. There are certain facts about this one (Sony DSC P-8) that I am not too fond of. For eg. the zoom is too less. Another thing, I can never take pics at night. Most people mention a night mode but I need a tripod for that. Guess that would be true for any camera, right?
What I desire in my new camera:
Better zoom
Panoramic view, if that’s not too much to ask for
How do you click pictures under normal yellow light? I tried to take pics at home in India and the result was not-so-happening. No modes for that?
Maybe I should chuck these imaginings and just get a tripod.
Any ideas?

sony cameras usually have image stability so that it is not so necessary to have a tripod at nights..(well, compared to other cameras). best way to select a camera is go to http://dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and input one or two facilities you want and see the cameras available with those facilities. almost all good brands are listed over there in dpreview.
Or you can check by each brand..
dont you have white balance modes for yellow light?
are you looking for an easy to carry, point n shoot camera or a bit more professional one?
also, you get good stable tripods at cheap prices (not the too small ones). it will always help in serious photography.
almost all brands now have 10x zoom models in the market.

I guess all Sony cameras work poorly under low-light conditions. I have a T-33 and it is pretty useless for night photography. And with the night-mode on, the pictures come out very shaky without a tripod. One can’t use a Tripod everytime one wishes to take a picture right?
Better go for a high-end Cannon/Nikon

My thoughts, exactly…

for normal yellow light, try setting the camera to evaluative white balance – it will ask you to take a picture of what ought to be white, and adjust all other frequencies accordingly…
and hey, a tripod is the cheapest way to get a 10-15% improvement in your pictuers!!

Yeah, guess I should get a tripod before anything else.

i would suggest the fujifilm s5600
Looks like you’re looking to move out of the point n shoot mode..
i’d gone through the same kind transission a few months back for my digital camera, and all the RnD brought me down to this one.. the fuji s5600. not exactly what you would call a digital SLR, but it is close, and well, it’s worth every paisa i payed for it.
there almost no purple fringing at all, the metering is nice, gives me a lot of setings i can use to tweak my pictures ( post shot tweaking in photoshop doesnt even come close!)
it has a 10x zoom as well, and a fixed lens, which makes the camera sturdier, and for all i know brings down the turnon-pressthebutton-click time the best i have come across.
THe night mode shouldnt be a big concern.. whichever camera you go for, if ur talking image stability, you’ll need a tripod.
but this one also gives you a great ISO range, and as you can set your own aperture and shutterspeed, if you have a tripod, you can click pretty good ones in the night, and indoors as well..
sample snaps at my blog.

Sony has been a wonderful camera for me. Have used it to get some good shots. Try the tripod option first.
As for the yellow light – change the settings in the menu options to the ‘bulb’ image. It will help in getting a good picture.

Did that as well. Don’t think it really helped in giving a natural look…

Sorry all you Sony fans, but a Sony point and shoot is not for me. Bad Light problems, lack of a decent zoom are a couple of irritating factors.
Locks, depends on what you need.
– Zoom – a decent optical zoom increases the size of the camera immensely. My minolta Z10is probably double the width of your Sony. But, needless to say amazing pics.
– Features – to turn and twist a bad photo into a brilliant one
– Manual adjustment – for the finicky.
Nikon, Minolta and Olympus make very good cameras. As someone mentioned dpreview.com should give you all the info you need.
