Jaage hain der tak…

This song has such a sweeping quality about it. Rahman has used the Madras Chorale Group for this. It is interesting to see the way the song unfolds. Chithra opens the song in her almost-whispering voice – full of hope and wistfulness. Then the violins start – gentle, layered and halting punctuated by the mighty resounding drums, a gentle yet heavy beat in the background as voices start being heard and the drum beat becomes more regular, more insistent. Then silence save the whirring sound keeping the beat. Rahman takes over – his voice unsure, shaking… when you think the song has turned so mild, Rahman’s voice breaks out into song – clear, loud and straight from the heart. Then a gentleness to the song, it turns slightly intense, the pitch rises – then the Chorale group bursts forth – Like a legion of men, women and children together singing about their half-fulfilled dreams, asking for more time…

I don’t recall when this song makes an appearance or even what the significance is. Anyone cares to explain?
