This was the temple where we lit lamps all around. That’s called Chuttuvilakku. It is a lot of fun lighting all the lamps with your family. I have heard that Guruvayoor has thousands of lamps since it is such a large temple. I have often seen people lighting them during Deepaaradhana. Should do that someday.
Well, this is where I got married. Right in front of this temple entrance. It is said that if you’re getting married in a temple, there is no Muhurth required since any time is an auspicious one. The funny thing about the wedding in Kerala was, there were so many people who were conducting the marriage! My Dad’s friend, the photographer, my aunt, my Mom – it was hilarious.

lovely! I’d love to see temples in Kerala. Strangely I never saw one there. There is a lot i haven’t done in Kerala, coz most of our trips now are a result of some wedding or death. Don’t do the “every-summer-in-kerala” routine anymore. That ended with my grandmother’s death!
I should go get touristy in Kerala some time!

This is my Dad’s family temple where Narakasura is the deity. Funnily enough, it was my husband who pointed this out to me on his first visit there (during our wedding). Silly me, I had never noticed it all these years…

Oops, I meant to say Narasimhan, not Narakasuran…:-)

do you have a pic of the deity?
temples with narasimha as the main deity are supposed to me very powerful!

I didn’t take the camera inside the temple. So no deity pic!

This is the temple in my Dad’s Variam. I adore the temples in Kerala and frankly speaking, I have not been able to find that feeling of home in many temples out of Kerala…:-(

I can only imagine the history, culture and tradition it is steeped in.
Poor you! you prolly can even smell the oil in the burning lamps.
… and no one appreciates the sacrifices we make – they just see the fancy clothes and cameras and think you lead a charmed life here 🙁

Home is always dearer no matter where you are, I suppose. On the other hand, making a home where you are is the best option?

I think the temple that you went to is called a Pambukaavu. I guess snakes are worshipped there and you also leave milk for the serpents. There is one near this very same temple as well.
