Maana janaab ne pukaara nahin,
Kya mera saath bhi ganwaara nahin,
Mufth mein banke, chal diye tan ke,
Wallah jawaab tumhaara nahin…
I’m trying to see if I can write a series on songs I love. In Hindi films. Will try to make it a regular feature because it saves me the bother of thinking about what to write. And write, I have to, as regularly as I can.
The above song features in Paying Guest. Not a film I have seen but I think Dev Anand and Nutan star in it. I love this song, though. A recent variation or remix was sung by Shaan in an album called ‘Let the night be Latino’. The remix was good, the video even better. Well, there was this girl built along very generous lines and she played the part of a waitress in some seedy joint. Apparently she loves to dance but since she’s a waitress, she never gets to dance herself. One night, after all the patrons have left, she throws off her waitress-kapda and shimmies into this slinky dress and heats up the dance floor with *salsa* moves. Provocative video apart, the song was good. Shaan’s voice only made it better and salsa mixed well with it. You gotta hear it to believe me, though…
What I really like about this song is the usage of janaab and saahab in a female sense. It seems rather cool to address your babe/beloved/better half as Saahab. Or Begum for that matter but that of course, is a traditionally female term!
sthira says:
It’s coolness wrapped with a rather unique sense of respect, as if you are addressing someone to whom you are ready to surrender your life!

My Ma-in-law looks a lot like Nutan. The high forehead, the sharp nose, the shaped lips… Dev Anand was my Mom’s favourite hero. Lucky chap, he has some of the best songs from the black-n-white era.

How about these:
1. Ae meri shah-e-khubaan, ae meri jaan-e-janaana
Tum mere paas hoti ho, koi doosra nahin hota
2. Teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai
3. Kabhi na kabhi, kahin na kahin koi na koi to aayega
Listen to these on http://www.musicindiaonline.com if you haven’t already – they are all very poignant……

Yeah, even I like the way songs from old Hindi movies sound so bloody respectful. Like Aapki Aankhon Mein Kuchh from Ghar.
My parents are always complaining about the Tu-Tadaak in the music these days.

The songs from the old hindi movies can always be counted on… for everything…. fun moods, sad moods, contemplative moods… there’s one for every mood. Beautiful lyrics and uplifting music. Though I do listen to all kinds of music, one fine day the heart just yearns for a Kishore or Rafi number. Have been humming a Rafi number for the past few days :
Quote
Woh jab yaad aaye…… bahut yaad aaye…..
Gham-e-zindagi ke andhere mein humne…. chirag-e-muhabbat jalaye bujhaaye….. woh jab yaad aaye…. bahut yaad aaye………..
Unquote
Not ashamed of admitting it, many of these songs bring tears to my eyes – the lyrics are simple and straight from the heart.

I wouldn’t where to start …. and especially, where to stop 🙂 !!
Lovely song …… don’t know if i want to hear a remix, but i guess it’ll find its way to my ears, sooner or later.
‘Janaab’ reminds me more of Haal kaisa hai janaab ka 🙂
And your remark about ‘Janaab’, ‘Begum’ etc. reminds me of Huzoor is qadar bhi from Masoom …. ‘huzoor’ fits into the same category.
