Aaja saanwariya,
Tohe garwaa lagaa loo,
Ras ke bhare tohe nayan, saanwariya,
Ras ke bhare tohe nayan…
Set in Raag Desh (Am I right, savyasachi?), one of my favourite raagas, a charming composition from Monsoon Wedding. I like the words of the song too! In the league of Alaipaayuthey (Raagam Kaanada) and Endaro Mahaanu (Raagam Sree). I mean, the latter compositions which have been fused with modern beats and rhythms in films. Or even Ajay Pohankar’s Piya Baanwari.

Sorry, don’t remember – saw MW many months ago! How can I listen to it? And I’d REALLY like to, because I LOVE Raag Desh. Don’t know if Piya Baawari is in Raag Desh; will ask someone (if we’re talking about the same song that is 🙂 )
Do send me the song or a link to it if you can, would love to listen to it.

Sorry, Aaja saanwariya is in Raag Bhairavi, not Desh. Or so I think! You can hear the track here… http://www.raaga.com/channels/hindi/movie/H000412.html
But Piya Baanwari isn’t Raag Desh. Unfortunately, I can’t get my hands on that song…:-(

Beautiful song. I remember I had recorded the song twice just because I wanted it to go on and on.
Monsoon Wedding songs can be listened to online at http://musicindiaonline.com/l/17/s/movie_name.1297/
This particular song goes by the name Fabric.
That’s Sardari Begum for you:

Musicindiaonline.com has a very good collection of all types of music but they can’t be downloaded I think. Enjoy!

No, musicindiaonline allows you to only hear them. I love Fabric myself. As well as Fuse Box.

Or even Ajay Pohankar’s Piya Baanwari
Ajay Pohankar sing. Abhijit Pohankar mix. That fellow uses silly elements all over the place, in otherwise wonderful tracks.

Ah, this one’s a childhood favourite – or more accurately, Jaidev’s composition for the movie Gaman rendered beautifully by Hiradevi Mishra(?). Gaman was one of the most oft-played LPs in our home.
I found the lyrics in phonetic notation on a website :
are pathik giridhaarii suu.N itanii kahiyo Ter
dig jhar laa_ii raadhikaa ab bR^ij bhuulat pher
aa jaa sa.Nvariyaa tohe garavaa lagaa luu.N
ras ke bhare tore nain, sa.Nvariyaa
ras ke bhare tore nain
jehii chitavat tehii bas karii raakhat
naahii pa.De maikaa chain sa.Nvariyaa
ras ke bhare tore nain
Try out the music of Gaman if you haven’t – there are several beautiful songs.

Thanks, Rileen… I found the songs on MusicIndiaOnline. But not the song that you’ve referred to….I love most of the songs, though!

I guess it’ll be hard to find online – might be available in music stores in Mumbai, though, whenever you go there.
Just had a look at Raaga.com, they don’t even have the movie listed! But i spotted another of the most played albums in our house – Ghar. Sheer briliiance.

Ghar has beautiful songs, I agree… The more I listen to RD, the more I fall in love with his music. In fact, there is no specific style that he has ever used that you can identify as his signature, I think. He is sheer brilliance….

Quite agree, but one must also give credit to Gulzar’s lyrics & Lata-Kishore’s renditions – without them, Ghar wouldn’t be the brilliant album it is.

the Soundtrack of MW is truly awesome! For me, aaja saanwariya is second only to the dard-bhara rendition of Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo 🙂
I purchased the CD for a high quality copy of that one song, on this visit to mumbai.
