Yet another American-Desi type film which looked promising at the start and ended up as a complete bore. Bharati Achrekar and Anjan Srivastava (The Wagles) look misplaced in this venture which has a whole lot of newbies parading as actors. Rushma Malik (does anyone remember her as an old MTV VJ with trippy eyes?) has a good role; the rest of the cast is made up of losers! I think I can do a better job at acting…:-)
Pooja Kumar, another looker, is a bad actress. Quite an effort to watch her *emote*.
Love in the time of Cholera is finally over. A saga of love spanning more than half a century, it took a long time to complete. Will I read more of Marquez’s works? Hmm, I don’t really know. He has an eye for detail and description, a picturesque imagination, a quality of bringing images to life and specially, bringing out the beauty of a South American city steeped in filth, old time grandeur, sickness and depravity. I never imagined almond trees and park benches to give forth such a fragrance of beauty and romance as they did in this novel. Quite a romantic is Mr. Marquez!
Vanity Fair was somewhat of a disappointment. Reese W is a fine actress; she is so good on screen. One of the parts I really loved in the film was the Arabic song Salaam Aaleikkum. I have heard the song half a million times in Cairo and have always disliked the cocky feel to it. Added to the fact that the video featured a balding car mechanic popping out from below the car with a side-splitting grin on his face! In any case, that was one of the nicer bits about Vanity Fair.
That kinda sums up all of what I wanted to write about and didn’t write for fear that my expression wouldn’t do justice to my sentiment. Besides, I barely read anything from my older LJ-pals: diffdrummer, hariputtar, rileen and many others… where art thou guys?
The sun seems to have deserted this city. It remains gloomy and sun-less more or less all day long. Morbid weather and I hope that it passes over. Finally got some much-needed shopping out of the way and realised that I have no idea what to shop for in this country! As silly as it sounds, I was chic in India, not so in USA! I really need to reinvent dressing in this country, my style, I mean! Start understanding how to *layer* clothes, how to shop for smart jackets, mid-length skirts with slits, what jackets to wear with skirts…. It will be a good winter, Inshallah!

You must must must read “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” if you have not done so already. Very fast-paced, short novel. My favorite Marquez book.
“Love…” was a strange book. I have never thought of love in those terms and I am still not sure I agree with the concept. The characters and situations are interesting, but I can’t really identify with the motivations.

What motivations are you talking about? I found the book passionate and compelling but I didn’t really catch a new concept to love here. Enlighten me, please?

The motivations / definition of love that I don’t get:
That as a young woman she could love him as passionately as she did and then in a moment decide she really didn’t love him after all, and not even have the consideration to do so gently…
That he could love her as passionately as he did and have hundreds of casual sexual liaisons on the side, and not even have the decency to admit to having them.

Hey L, saw this great shopping place next to Elphi near Fort called West End (?) It is right across FabIndia. The styles were very posh and colors were amazingly vibrant. Great store. In general, I do think the indian women dress better in India than here. Maybe its just the fabulous choices they have there, and the warmer weather – so no need to swadle yourself in sweaters or jackets.
