I have to recount this incident which took place in a classroom of Mechanical Engg. students, final year in my college. The subject was Machine Design and the teacher was a tough cookie named Chawla. He was a very hard taskmaster and in his tutorials which were marked out of 5, it was very creditable to score a 3. 4 and above were unheard of. One tutorial, the students submitted their designs to the Prof and waited as he corrected the submissions. Once he’d finished correcting, Chawla started calling out the students by name. One guy ambled up to find that his paper was marked with a huge 0. He was suddenly unsure as to how much was the paper marked out of. He asked Chawla,” Sir, 0 out of?”
With a contemptuous smile, Chawla replied,”0 out of sympathy.”
HAhAHHAH!!!

Hah – me, i need to watch it lest i turn into one of those – as a TA, i told a girl last week that what she was doing was ‘proof by assumption’.
Sadly, she saw neither joke nor the point ……

Arre, i’ve done it too, more than you for sure – but never quite as literally as she did! Anyway, i’d forgotten that undergrads are a little too young not to be offended easily, shall be more sensitive from now on.
