It’s rather tiring to blog on Monday mornings… Too much to blog, too less of patience… ‘Bariwali’, ‘Maqbool’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Troy’… Phew! Onto the reviews…:-)
‘Bariwali’ is a fine film. Kiran Kher is a very elegant actress. She plays the part of a lonely, middle-aged spinster who lives in a large house with a caretaker and a maidservant. Her life is completely turned volte-face when a cinema crew decides to use her house for a film shooting. Then on the film proceeds to a somewhat sad, though realistic finish. Kiran Kher infuses her role with a certain vulnerability which arouses your sympathy without making you too maudlin. A far cry from the flamboyant role she played in ‘Devdas’…. This is a good film, definitely. Rupa Ganguli makes a guest appearance, as beautiful as she was in ‘Mahabharat’. Ohhh… Bengali women are unfairly blessed…:-(
‘Maqbool’ was quite a good movie, unlike what I heard from one of Pinch’s friends. I liked the conceptualisation(the announcer said that it was supposed to be a mix of ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Godfather’!), the performances, the background score… What a stellar star cast! Naseer, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor, Irrfan, Tabu… I wonder where Pankaj Kapoor was all these years… Since ‘Roja’, I haven’t really seen much of him.. He’s one classy actor… Naseer and Om Puri have done their roles so well; small wonder that they’re respected for their skill. Tabu has carried off the role of Nimmi wonderfully herself. Come to think of it, she was the driver of the entire film. She almost masterminded the film from start to finish… Like some old Hindi film dialogue ‘Aurat hi sab fasaad ki jad hain!’… She is a worthy successor to Shabana Azmi…
‘Fight Club’.. hmmm.. Brad Pitt is sexy, Ed Norton is good… Maybe I expected way too much from the film…:-) Btw, the film had too much of violence.. Broken noses, bloodied lips, black eyes.. Ouch! Maybe I should read the script…
‘Troy’ was a total anti-climax. Firstly, the artistic license that Wolfgang Petersen took was a bit too much to digest.. Anyone who has read ‘The Iliad’ can EASILY understand what I mean… How on earth did Achilles enter the Trojan Horse? Wonder why Brad Pitt picked this role… He normally steers clear of roles which pamper his phenomenal body and face… Or so I thought.
Phew!

i can understand u not being too impressed by fight club…one suggestion…go to http://www.imdb.com and read up the trivia section for fight club….you will figure out quite a few things in the movie…and if u need the script….i can always mail it…considering the fight club fan i am…i may just have two versions
i thought TROY was an anti climax too….somehow the dialogs are not just powerful enough…

I have seen the script on Drew’s site; thanks for the offer anyways! Btw, how can you understand the reason why I wasn’t impressed? The concept of the fight club was intriguing; not so of the film… I felt it was a rehash of an old idea…
As for Troy, Helen wasn’t as gorgeous as Homer painted her to be.. Dialogues were rather weak.. and as for all those thousand ships and fleets and forces, they looked so obviously digital!

when i say i can understand u not being impressed…i am not refering to any reason..all i can say is i know many who have not been impressed ’cause the whole concept of the movie is a little wierd and so i understand u not liking the movie even when i am such a big fan and would usually consider it as sacrilege….another thing…i have noticed…that the appeal of fight club is in many caes based on the stage of life u are in….
again i have seen the movie a dozen times and can rant away abt the finer points….as for troy..the lesser we talk…the better:)

fight club
Oh I am a huge fan myself….my fascination started with the movie and continued with the book….it is a very tautly written book and the movie captures the strain very well I thought….it is violent but not in the overtly gross way….scary as it may sound the movie makes violence seem like just another drug…..and the chemistry between Pitt and Norton is just phenomenal….oh should watch the movie again!!!!!

If i recall correctly, shares your sentiments – perhaps because Ma’s side of the family is Bengali, i’d never thought of this. But personally, i think there are plenty of beautiful girls in all states, countries, etc etc
I intend to see Maqbool, perhaps will buy the DVD …..
I was actually more impressed by Eric Bana’s Hector than by Brad Pitt’s Achilles. And hey, Diane Kruger’s wasn’t so bad 🙂

Lakshmi says:
yeah, Eric Bana was better any day.. Orlando Bloom was another boor… But seriously, Diane K didn’t even look Grecian… Aren’t Greeks dark-haired and dark-eyed too?

Ever seen Jennifer Aniston?

Lakshmi says:
What about Jen Aniston? Does she look Grecian?

Unless i’m much mistaken, she is of Greek origin.

Hmm… haven’t heard that before.

Well, a short visit to IMDB confirmed that, and i was surprised to learn that Brad Pitt is 40 years old. Anyway, what i was saying that this “Grecian => dark hair and dark eyes” notion seems to be somewhat misleading.

???!!! Brad Pitt… 40? Ohhh…

A friend tells me that blondeness of helen came about sometime during renaissance (or maybe a little earlier than that). The earlier depictions were in fact of a black-haired beauty.
(btw, i dont know how authentic this link is: http://www.clairol.com/brand/blonding/trivia.jsp)
