Gave off ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’ by Irving and ‘Rabbit, Run’ by Updike. Maybe I’ll pick them up later… Frankly, I don’t say that with too much confidence.
I completed ‘Of Human Bondage’ this morning. Plain loved the book. Truthful, courageous and … Out of adjectives, actually! I really liked it. It was very reminiscent of some other book I’ve read, don’t remember presently which one. Must pick up more of Maugham.
That book along with other incidents reinforce the belief which Shankar Mahadevan proclaimed breathlessly(!) in his song ‘Breathless’… ‘Swarg agar hain to bas hain yaheen par…’
Also got ‘The English Patient’ by Micheal Onadaatje, ‘The Farewell Party’ by Milan Kundera and ‘The Mummy or Ramses The damned’ by Anne Rice. Have never read Rice before; sounds like a fantastic read to me… I looked for ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’, didn’t find it… Also looked for ‘The Age of Reason’ by Sartre; should have completed it the last time I started on it! Damn!
Forgot to mention; finally got my new digicam. A Sony P-8; lets’ see how the pics materialise.

But with my constant problem of speed reading, good books require greater effort…

good luck
Lux, you’ve picked a pretty heavy list….good luck with getting thru’ all of them….the only one I’ve read is The English Patient…which I didn’t get at all and I was really sad since it was supposed to be really beautiful and moving and stuff….don’t know why but I always confuse that book with The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro…it is a good read….I can hardly wait till summer….have SO SO SO many books on my list…..

Re: good luck
Oh it’s sooooooooo long….
More than specific books, I have a list of authors whose works I’d like to read….John Steinbeck, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip Dick, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy….I’m sure there are more…just cannot remember them off the top of my head….and as far as books go I want to read the Illiad….but I am impatient with verse and am not sure which translation to read etc….maybe the Gita again….I don’t know why but recently I feel my faith in everything being shaken gradually….so need to reaffirm my belief is somethings soon!!!!

Human bondage
I have read that book ‘Of Human Bondage’ long back probably when I was at your age. I felt that the auther was describing me. Same thing I felt when I was reading ‘Razer’s Edge’. The main character is so much like mine. Good books. So natural that you always find somebody around you similar to the characters. Sartre’s Age of Reason is a bit tough. He himself is confused, Essence preceeds Existance or is it the other way? You should read ‘First Circle’,’Cancer Ward’ etc.

Did you feel that you were similar to Philip? I can identify with certain aspects of his psyche myself at various times in my life… Must read ‘Razor’s Edge’.

If you plan to read Anne Rice, you may want to check out ” Memnoch “. All her other books are tedious. Her husband is a poet and I guess she allows that to seep into her own work.
